I can dig both of you. Juan is sharing the 'wealth' and I appreciate that he's thinking of everyone positively. That's one of the things I like about this board. There are serious players here (you're one of them, Dazz) and what they say can really be an inspiration to young AND OLD!

You could tell that I've been a real fan of Ndugu for a long, long time. I could go on about him.

As for Dom, I'd say he's at a disadvantage because we aren't really hearing him in that musical context, which is so important, as you rightly mentioned. Perhaps, if we did, we'd find ourselves thinking about him differently but until then, he's open to criticism as any instructor has to be, as far as I am concerned.

What I hear people saying about him most is that he is very positive, as well as expensive!

In Famularo's defense, I will say that he has a nice lookin' pair of hands. But I too could do without his superficial act. It creeps me the hell out. No, he does not groove in the least. But he IS the goodwill ambassador of the drumming community and probably an all-around good dude. Dazz, the statue's c--- reference is amazingly funny. I'm adding it to my repertoire.

I think Dom is doing a good service to the drumming comunity, he is a good player and a relly funny guy, and has some useful information. As far as I know he has'nt recorded with any group.
The last time I saw him, he played over one track of the Vic Firth play alongs CD, (the Zoro track), it was a funk shuffle, he played with real attitude and with the energy of a teen ager, but also sounded like one, he was rushing and totaly out of the pocket, and the fills were very unmusical to my taste.
Anyway, he may not be the best player arround, but I think it's great that he's supporting the art of drumming and sharing information with everyone. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I'm not that familiar with Ndugu, his groove stuff with M Jackson is impecable, but Pete, maybe you could recomendme some other Cds with him. By. P.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I wholeheartedly concur with you Peter. I appologise if I came across a bit brash, but that's the whole point. If what Pedro says is true, that the guy (Dom) never or hardly gigs then he's on very dodgy grounds, no matter how much information or knowledge he has on grips, playing open or whatever. As ar as I'm concerned, if he fails to deliver in a MUSICAL context and by that I mean not just in front of a group students, then he could potentially be emparting incorrect or misleading information to students: who hopefully are wanting to progress in a MUSICAL sense and not just a 'drumnastic' one. Dangerous.

Dazzler, that is soooo funny. I thought the same thing. Pretty cheesy.

I saw Dom years ago when I was young at a drum clinic with Liberty DeVito (remember that clinic tour?), and it was pretty cool. So for younger players, he's definitely a good clinician and educator. I liked his stuff better when he played trad, though, and he needs to lose the phony game-show host vibe.

Also, keep in mind that many who post on this site are very, very good players and can recognize and critique things that less experienced players can't. So while you might not like Dom, a twelve year old might really get some good info from him, albeit have nightmares about his creepy laugh.

Like I said, I've heard great things about his playing. My friend actually studies under him at USC (and I guess I will too, since I'll be going there for at least some period of time).

I'd also like to note that I didn't say anything about Dom.

What I did say is that Ndugu maybe shouldn't be teaching beginners technique. I don't know how any knowledgable and experienced drummer could watch his double stroke roll and not go "Wow, that's sloppy!"

I agree they are 2 graet drummers, but addressing the "double stroke roll" in Ndugu's videos.

I think, beign all fans of vince.. etc the greats. We all have good ears.

That mans display of double stroke rolls was HORRID. Before anyone jumps on my case, i'm not making this a "I'm better then him thing", I'm asking you to Listen to what he is playing.

Those are very very bad doubles, i don't have to be a drum god to be able to hear uneveness and ill timed strokes.

Perhaps, he was having a bad day, but that video should have not been put up there.

You watch jeff queen's videos and listen to his double stroke rool then listen to Ndugu's. There is a world of difference between nice and clean.. and ndugu's.
